For those too lazy to click...
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 13, 2009
New York, NY:
Progressive metal veterans DREAM THEATER have announced BLACK CLOUDS & SILVER LININGS as the title of their tenth studio album. The band commenced work on the album – their second for Roadrunner Records, following up 2007's Systematic Chaos — in October of last year.
Roadrunner will release the record on June 23. In addition to the standard version CD, the album will also be available on vinyl LP, as well as a 3-disc Special Edition CD that will include the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs, the titles of which will be revealed at a later date.
Six weeks prior to the June 23 street date, Roadrunner will release one cover song per week through digital retailers.
Drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci are once again at the helm as producers, while Paul Northfield mixed the record.
The band will embark on a world tour in support of the album beginning in Europe throughout June which will be followed by the second edition of the band’s PROGRESSIVE NATION tour featuring Zappa Plays Zappa, Pain Of Salvation and Beardfish throughout North America in July/August.
A video for the first single, "A Rite of Passage" will be shot in late March.
The track listing for BLACK CLOUDS & SILVER LININGS is as follows:
1. A Nightmare to Remember
2. A Rite of Passage
3. Wither
4. The Shattered Fortress
5. The Best of Times
6. The Count of Tuscany

Very intriguing. Why do I feel like the Count of Tuscany should seem like a really lame name for a song, but I kinda love it?

Man, I love that cover! Kind of reminds me of awake for some reason...
The "instrumental" mixes sounds intriguing...almost as if they are trying to slowly boot James out of the band to make liquid tension experiment...I think I shall get the special edition; those mixes sound rather cool.......

It was only a matter of time.
That's OK. James' solo stuff is awesome.
Anyway, new DT = Djm being excited.

I wonder if they'll add/bring forward other parts on the instrumental mix. I don't know if a karaoke version of the cd sounds very interesting, even if it is DT.

I also would like to know if the instrumental mixes will be any different. I bought the Special Edition Dark Passion Play by Nightwish because it had instrumental tracks on the second disc. I was hoping for more orchestra or different renditions, but it was just a karaoke CD. Quite disappointing.

Pun intended?
I'm looking forward to the instrumental version. Sometimes it's nice to hear songs without the vocals so you can focus on the music a bit more.

Not going to "examine" the clues of the album like alot of the DTfanatics are doing on the
Portnoy Site (or make, eh-em, a "mess" like they are), or take Popshots on anything I haven't
even heard yet .
I'm gonna' take it for what it is, I like the titles of songs, love the title . . .
And at 1st I thought the Cover was Hugh Syme, but the more I looked at it, I think alot of people
are right, it does look like it belongs to the same "Artist" as for Images & Words and Awake
(Change of Seasons too). I think Hugh wouldn't of had such "empty space" in the foreground, its
not his kind of compositioning (sorry, the artist in me ).
. . . I like it though, its as if everything is in movement.
I look forward to the release, as always .

Yeah the first thing that struck me is the similarity in style to Awake's artwork (which stands as my favorite by a long shot due to each song being represented somehow). Though it doesn't seem to have quite the same punch as Awake did, mainly due to the fact I cannot see the connection to the songs yet. Perhaps after hearing them it will make more sense. That said I am keeping a calculated measure to my reaction and not letting my excitement build... ok I'm lying, the more I hear the more intrigued I get. Lets hope all the buildup pays off...

 Some more info from Portnoy
He was on Eddie Trunk's show last night, and wouldn't give much away, but he did give out some news:
- "The Shattered Fortress" is the conclusion of the AA saga
- There are 4 long epics and 2 shorter songs (still over 8 minutes each)
- There are 6 songs totalling about 75 minutes of music
- "The Rite of Passage" will be the first single, though it will be edited to 5+ minutes
- Portnoy wrote lyrics for 2 songs, Petrucci did the other 4 songs (no Myung or JLB lyrics)
- The other song Portnoy wrote (besides "TSF") is about his late father; did not specify which song
- Hugh Syme did the fantastic artwork
